The Story of Dhul-Qarnayn

Dhul-Qarnayn

They ask you about Dhul-Qarnayn.
Say, "I will relate to you something of his story."

Indeed, We established him in the land
and gave him the means to everything.

So he followed a way.

Until, when he reached the farthest west,
he found the sun setting in a murky spring,
and he found some people there.

We said, "O Dhul-Qarnayn!
Either punish them or treat them kindly."

He said, "Whoever does wrong,
we will punish him.
Then he will be returned to his Lord,
Who will punish him with a horrible torment.

But whoever believes and acts righteously
will have the finest reward,
and We will speak to him kindly."

Then he followed another way.

Until, when he reached the farthest east,
he found the sun rising on a people
for whom We had provided no shelter from it.

So it was, and We knew all about him.

Then he followed another way.

Until, when he reached between two mountains,
he found a people who could barely understand his speech.

They pleaded, "O Dhul-Qarnayn!
Indeed, Gog and Magog are spreading corruption throughout the land.
May we pay you tribute,
provided that you build a barrier between us and them?"

He replied, "What my Lord has provided me is far better.
But assist me with resources,
and I will build a sturdy barrier between you and them.

Bring me blocks of iron."

Then, when he had leveled them between the two cliffs,
he said, "Blow!"

Then, when it became like fire,
he said, "Bring me molten copper to pour over it."

So the enemies could neither scale nor tunnel through it.

He declared, "This is a mercy from my Lord.
But when the promise of my Lord comes to pass,
He will level it to the ground.
And my Lord's promise is always true."

On that day,
We will let them surge like waves over one another.
Then the Trumpet will be blown,
and We will gather them all together.

And We will present Hell on that Day to the disbelievers,
who turned a blind eye to My revelations
and a deaf ear to My warnings.
